Walcha Christmas lights changes

Christmas light displays in Walcha could look very different next year.

When the Christmas lights go up in Walcha next year, they could look very different from the displays on exhibition this year.

Walcha Shire Council is considering introducing new categories to their Christmas Lights competition for 2013.

Potential new categories include displays that are visually appealing in daylight hours, and solar powered displays.

General Manager of Walcha Council Jack O'Hara says it's all about saving energy in the face of rising electricity costs.

"We're basically looking at introducing new categories that don't have to rely on electricity, such as solar or visually appealing," he said.

"It was a little late to introduce that category this year when we thought of the idea, because most people would have organised their lights already."

"We're actually going to look at introducing something along those lines next year, so the families that are struggling with their electricity costs won't be disadvantaged."

Jack O'Hara says the process will start in around June.

"We'll come up with some sort of proposal to put to council, and we'll see where we go from there," he said.

"We're looking at not disadvantaging the families struggling with electricity costs, as we all are."
