Caltrans seeks bids for 42,000 LED streetlights

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued an Invitation for Bid (IFB) for the purchase of 42,000 LED streetlight luminaires. The installation of the LED streetlights will take place in four increments of approximately 10,000 fixtures each with a focus on the state’s highway system. This project is the first phase of the state of California’s long term goal to replace the high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights on the state’s highways with energy efficient solid-state lighting.

The IFB specifies the following pre-qualified vendors: American Electric Lighting of Conyers, Georgia; BetaLED/Cree of Sturtevant, Wisconsin; Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia; GE Lighting Systems of East Flat Rock, North Carolina; Holophane Lighting of Rescue, California; Leotek Electronics of Milpitas, California; Lighting Science Group of Satellite Beach, Florida; LSI Industries of Cincinnati, Ohio; Philips HADCO of Littlestown, Pennsylvania; and Philips Roadway Lighting of Rosemont, Illinois.

For the first phase of installation, the LED luminaires used in Roadway 1 application will replace 200 watt HPS streetlights. In the Roadway 2 application, the LED luminaires will replace 310 watt HPS streetlights. Selected photometric requirements include a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3,500 K to 6,500 K and a color rendering index (CRI) of 65 or greater.

Completed bids must be submitted to Caltrans by July 13, 2012. The deadline for questions and requests for clarifications is June 28, 2012. The complete bid document is available on the BidSync website.
