Mogadishu switches on solar street lights

Mogadishu Thursday inaugurated solar street lights as the recovering capital continues to spruce up its appearance following decades of war-driven neglect.

Youths run a two-and-a-half marathon street race as the lights came on at at Maka al-Mukarrama Avenue, a major traffic way that links the city’ Aden Abdulle International Airport to Villa Somalia, the state house.

The entire stretch was illuminated by the bulbs each attached to a solar system mounted on the poles.

"Tonight, we are witnessing the first stage of Mogadishu transcending the ‘Dark Age’,” Mogadishu Mayor Mohamed Ahmed Nur told cheerful residents as he cut a ceremonial ribbon.

"If successful, we are going to propagate this scheme to the rest of the city streets," he added.
Mayor Nur thanked the government of Norway for donating the solar lighting system.

Mohamed Hassan, a media analyst in Mogadishu said the scheme was very economical. “It is the first time ever a street in Mogadishu has been lit up by a solar system," he said.
