Jayas green lamp plan gets a push

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered the construction of offices for committees she set up to speed up the process of replacing tubelights with energy-efficient LED and solar-powered lamps for street lights. The move comes after she ordered the conversion of street lamps across the State.

Jayalalithaa also ordered the setting up of technical committees and high-level committees to oversee the speedy implementation of the scheme, a press release from the government said.

These committees would be housed in new office buildings, that are to be constructed at a cost of `87 crore. The Chief Minister ordered the allocation of `26 crore towards this purpose. The new offices will come up in Salem, Hosur, Maraimalai Nagar, Kodaikkanal, Sankarankoil in Nellai district, Thiruchengode, Ranipet, Theni-Allinagaram, Dharmapuri, Thuraiyur and Paramakudi.

The State government had decided to implement the pilot project in the Salem Corporation and 35 municipalities and 101 town panchayats. It is aimed “to reduce energy consumption and costs by replacing the inefficient tubelights with energy-efficient LED and solar lights, at a time when municipal corporations are finding it difficult to create facilities and services in urban areas due to rising population and rocketing energy and maintenance costs,” read the release.

Nine-member technical committees and seven-member committees of high-level officials for Corporations and nine-member technical committees and six-member high-level committees for municipalities and town panchayats would be formed, said the release.
