Saint-Gobain: Going local in India

Even as solar module manufacturers look to grow their global presence, sourcing nearby suppliers is increasingly crucial to keeping costs low and processes efficient in order to remain competitive. Indian developer and manufacturer of solar thermal systems and crystalline PV modulesEmmvee Photovoltaics, was challenged by shifts in customer demands to diversify its product offerings. While the Bengaluru-based company wanted to present cost-effective options, proximity played a significant role in the company’s search for a nearby supplier of module construction materials.

Emmvee Photovoltaics was already an established manufacturer of complete solar thermal systems servicing the Indian market when the company first partnered withSaint-Gobain Solar as a glass supplier in 2004. Meanwhile, competition among global industry players prompted a need to diversify Emmvee Photovoltaics’s product lines for more efficient, high-level performance modules at varied price points. “Emmvee Photovoltaics, like every other solar module manufacturer in the world, faces downward cost pressures today,” says K.R. Prasad, Sales Manager, Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics. “Improving efficiency is an effective way to minimize the impact of these pressures. This requires partnering with a supplier that can quickly provide a wide range of solutions and guidance on how they can be implemented to streamline the manufacturing process.” Meeting these customer needs required Emmvee Photovoltaics to select a supplier equipped with resources and a grasp of both local and international markets. The company chose Saint-Gobain Solar for its range of module manufacturing solutions, consultative approach, and also the fact that it hasa presence both on a local and global level.
